Nearly three decades ago, 23 Wisconsin municipalities established WPPI Energy as the state's first municipal electric company. In 1980, WPPI Energy communities assigned their existing power supply agreements to WPPI Energy, quickly making us the largest customer of each of the major Wisconsin utilities.
Building on that base, we began the slow and arduous task of negotiating better agreements, obtaining access to the transmission system and acquiring our own generating resources.
Membership reached 30 in 1989 when WPPI Energy bought into our first power plant. Twenty-one customer-owned utilities have joined since 2001 – including seven in Michigan and three in Iowa – bringing the total number of members communities to 51 in the three-state region.
