WPPI Energy awards more than $50,000 in energy efficiency grants
10.27.09
Through its RFP for Energy Efficiency program, WPPI Energy recently awarded more than $50,000 in grants for energy efficiency projects to two industrial companies served by WPPI Energy member utilities.
Grant incentives were awarded to two companies in the eighth round of RFP for Energy Efficiency bidding:
- Iron County Medical Care Facility, a customer of the municipal electric utility of the City of Crystal Falls in Michigan, will receive $30,000 for an energy saving upgrade to the facility’s air handling units and to add a high efficiency variable speed drive to control fans and regulate air pressure.
- Pride Sports Inc., a customer of Florence Utilities in Wisconsin, was awarded $20,123 to upgrade its existing air compressor system with a new system that will increase storage capacity and variable speed control.
The RFP for Energy Efficiency grants will help replace highly inefficient systems and reduce electrical usage. In total, both projects are expected to reduce energy usage by 385,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, enough energy to power 44 homes.
“We are pleased to award funding to these two companies for proposing solutions to reduce energy waste,” said Jake Oelke, Assistant Vice President of Energy Services. “Energy efficiency projects like these are a smart investment and will help both companies control their energy costs.”
WPPI Energy’s RFP for Energy Efficiency program invites large commercial and industrial customers to submit competitive proposals for cost-effective, energy saving upgrades to equipment and systems within their current facilities. The program makes electric energy savings projects a worthwhile business investment for large power customers.
Projects with energy savings of at least 150,000 kWh or on-peak demand reductions of at least 25 kilowatts or more can be submitted by customers of WPPI Energy member utilities for consideration under WPPI Energy’s RFP for Energy Efficiency program. The most recent round of RFP bidding was completed in August, and a subsequent round will close on November 13, with awards announced in December.
To date, WPPI Energy has funded 12 projects through the RFP for Energy Efficiency program, resulting in demand reductions of more than one megawatt and energy consumption decreases of six million kWh.
