"A Little City with a Big Velkommen." Rob Dixon of the New York Times described Westby as "one of the world's largest pockets of land surrounded entirely by glacial drift . . . the driftless region is a mecca for travelers who enjoy quick-changing vistas: switch back roads, valley mazes and steep limestone river bluffs."
Westby is located in the rolling hills of the north-central part of Vernon County on a ridge between the Mississippi river's Coulee Region and the Kickapoo River Valley at the intersection of HWY 14-61 and 27.
Norwegian immigrants settled in the area in 1848. The village was incorporated in 1896, and became a city in 1920. The current population of Westby is still mostly Norwegian. In fact, no nation, except Ireland, has provided the United States with as many immigrants in proportion to its population as Norway.
Today, Westby is a city for all seasons, the area offers over 200 miles of terrific trout streams as well as other recreational activities, including hiking, biking, golfing, canoeing, snowmobiling, cross-county skiing, hunting and ice fishing. In February, Westby is host the Snowflake Annual Ski Jumping Tournament - a two-day 114 meter world class competition held at the Westby Ski Club's Nordic Center. Located on County P, this event attracts ski jumpers from around the world and is one of only four ski jumping competitions held annually in North America.
